1-5: Common Disabilities

In your work in the community disability services sector, you will support individuals with a variety of disabilities -- some of the most common ones are discussed in this module. You will begin by exploring the impact that a disability label can have on a person’s life. Developmental disabilities -- specifically intellectual disabilities, autism, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) – are then examined. In the remaining sections, a variety of emotional and behavioural disorders are discussed (anxiety disorders, major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia), followed by physical disabilities and health impairments (cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and asthma). Key characteristics, etiology (cause), incidence, and prevention for various disorders are examined, as well as the support that can be provided by the community support worker.


Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss how having a disability “label” affects the individuals you support, and how such labeling affects your work
    1. Identify the key characteristics, etiology, incidence, and prevention strategies for each of the following conditions:
    2. intellectual disabilities;
    3. autism;
    4. fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
  2. Identify the key characteristics, etiology, and incidence for each of the following psychological disorders:
    1. anxiety disorders
    2. major depression
    3. bipolar disorder;
    4. schizophrenia.
  3. Identify the key characteristics, etiology, incidence, and prevention strategies for the following physical disabilities or health conditions, and describe how you can support individuals with these conditions
    1. cerebral palsy;
    2. spina bifida;
  4. asthma.
