Tips for Learning Material

  1. Familiarize yourself with the online learning materials. Review the Module Schedule to organize a timetable for completing the course activities.
  2. Give yourself enough time to learn the material or the skill. Make a schedule.
  3. Begin each module by reading and thinking about the introduction.
  4. Read and think about the learning outcomes. The outcomes tell you exactly what you need to know and be able to do in order to successfully complete the module. As you read each learning outcome, try to state it as a question. For example, if the learning outcome is, “Identify and practise strategies to reduce stress,” ask yourself, “What do I need to know and do in order to reduce my stress in the workplace?” Making questions out of each learning outcome will help you learn more quickly and easily.
  5. Read the information in each unit of the module. Think about the connections between the learning outcomes and the information. Make connections between the information and your work.
  6. If you do not understand some of the information, make a note of your problem.
  7. Go to your tutor with your question. If the answers you get do not clarify the information for you, ask again. Make sure your questions are answered.
  8. Do the learning exercises and self-assessments in each module. Use these exercises to test yourself. Your tutor may organize study groups that could include presentations and discussions of concepts covered in the modules. Group discussions will help you to analyze and explore new ideas.
  9. Talk to other people about what you are learning. Ask questions.
  10. Do not try to learn too much at once. A couple shorter sessions are often better than one long session.
  11. At the beginning of a learning session, review what you learned at the previous session.
  12. Before doing the Self-Test, review the learning outcomes. Try to remember the information that goes with each outcome. If you do not recall the information, reread the appropriate section.
  13. As you learn, give yourself a pat on the back. You deserve it!
